The Wine

The combination of elderflower, kaffir lime, golden peach, honeydew melon, and fresh passionfruit yields a delightfully aromatic, mature, and textured sensation, enhanced by lees contact, leading to a luscious finale. For those selecting a singular Marlborough sauvignon blanc, this would stand as the quintessential selection.

This wine's grapes come from the Southern Valleys and the central Wairau Plains in Marlborough. The vineyards boast varied alluvial soils, abundant with New Zealand's characteristic greywacke river stones. The grapes were softly pressed to yield a limited amount of premium juice. Before fermentation, the juice underwent cold settling and racking, followed by transfer to stainless steel tanks. A chosen fraction was allocated to seasoned oak barrels for natural yeast fermentation. Each batch from the vineyards was kept on lees to augment complexity, culminating in the ultimate blend and bottling.

About the Wine Maker

Greywacke, pronounced 'Greywacky,' is the Marlborough label of the Judd family and denotes New Zealand's most prevalent bedrock. These subtle grey river stones pepper Marlborough's riverbeds and vineyard soils.

Founded in 2009, Greywacke is a genuine family enterprise. Despite its global wine exports, the company maintains a 'keep it simple and hands-on' philosophy, managed by a small, committed team from its headquarters in Marlborough's Omaka Valley. The fruit comes from mature vineyards situated in optimal viticultural areas, leveraging Marlborough's sunny South Pacific climate.

The vineyards are sustainably cultivated, with a significant and growing share from organically farmed plots. Crop levels are kept low to intensify flavour concentration, and a prolonged, cool growing season yields fruit with exceptional varietal intensity and vibrant, natural acidity. Rigorous canopy management ensures adequate fruit exposure for flavour maturity, textural depth, and ideal acid balance. Greywacke holds AMW status (Appellation Marlborough Wine), certifying its origin, authenticity, and integrity. Each variety is cultivated and vinified to produce distinct wine styles, unified by the goal of flavour concentration and a seamless blend of texture and acidity.

The winemaking approach is minimally invasive, fostering wines with character and uniqueness, striving for understated, ripe, palatable styles. Extensive use of wild (indigenous) yeast fermentations adds complexity to the flavour profile and enhances mouthfeel structure and intensity. The Greywacke selection primarily features sauvignon blanc and pinot noir, with the sauvignon available in two unique styles. The lineup is rounded out with limited editions of chardonnay, riesling, and pinot gris.
