L.A.S. Vino ‘Barrels of Metricup'' Chardonnay 2023
The Wine
95 Pts Erin Larkin, Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 'The 2023 Barrels of Metricup Chardonnay leads with pineapple and pressed linen, yellow peach and Pink Lady apples. In the mouth, the wine is rich and full, loaded with opulent fruit and exotic spice. Everything is kept in check, and there is a long spool of flavor through the finish. For a mild, long year, this is concentrated, powerful and ripe. It's really good.'
95 Pts Jane Faulkner, Halliday's Wine Companion 'It’s always a delight to try Barrels of Metricup next to its sibling, Wildberry Springs. Different, as they should be, yet a thread of L.A.S Vino style links them. This is more textural, layered with flavour and coming out rather savoury, although there’s some dried pear, lemon and grapefruit, too. More oxidative notes add complexity alongside preserved, salty lemon and rind, white miso and grilled almonds, clotted cream lees and honeycomb.'
96 Pts Ray Jordan Wine 'The sandy loam soils of this mature vineyard play out a significant point of difference from other chardonnays in the region. It was all naturally fermented in barriques of which 20% was new and then went through with regular lees stirring and 10 months in oak. It’s alive with energy from the first burst on the nose. Layered with flavours of lemon curd, stone fruit and peach dominant stone fruit. Fine lingering acidity ensures it remains on track. Terrific.'

About the Wine Maker
“L.A.S stands for Luck Art Science: The ART of creating wine from essentially water and sunlight. The LUCK of the weather, the wind and the water during vintage. They say you need to know the rules to break them, we can thank SCIENCE for giving us an excuse to break the rules and create something different and interesting.” – Nic Peterkin
“Nic Peterkin was born with pedigree winemaking blood in his veins, but his own ingenuity and hard work have got him to where L.A.S. Vino is today. Nic has consistently produced wines that push boundaries and show a penchant for his calculated, out-of-the-box style of thinking. Whether it is alternate fermentation vessels, wildly extended time on skins (one nebbiolo once spent something like 400+ days on skins), experimental processes (fermenting grapes in sea water, or using the yeast of native flora, for example) Nic throws himself at wine with freshness and a vivacity and a curiosity that are catching. To say that the wines are expressive, and individual is true, but it doesn’t quite tell the whole story. These wines have a tendency to extract unexpected descriptors, flavours and experiences from the writer, and the drinker, all the while portraying a classicism and accuracy of site that make them so brilliant” – Erin Larkin – Halliday Wine Companion
Nic’s probably already over the comparisons but when you’re the son of the founder of Pierro Dr Mike Peterkin and Shelly Cullen it’s hard not to take note. His attention to detail doesn’t simply stop at what is frankly very smart packing. Going back to the origin of what’s in the bottle he is hand picking, hand sorting, hand stirring. Its serious business and a clear vision of quality.
