Domaine Stephane Magnien Morey Saint Denis ‘Grains Fins’ 2020
The Wine
89-92 Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy : "Made from two younger plots in a draining soil. Bright purple with darker centre. A little reduction here. Plenty of energy, concentrated dark red fruit, with a certain bite to it. Has kept fresh despite the sunshine summer. Tasted: December 2021"

About the Wine Maker
Domaine Stéphane Magnien is a tiny domaine of just 4.5 hectares. Given its small stature, it's little surprise that it has the tendency to fly under the radar. But the quality of wines being produced here means it won’t stay that way. Based in Morey St Denis, the domaine spans an impressive 12 appellations and includes two top grands crus - Clos Saint-Denis and Charmes-Chambertin. Stéphane is the fourth generation to run the domaine, he’s been in charge since 2008 and the quality of the wines he is making continues to soar. His minimal use of oak and light extraction gives rise to wines which are expressive, complex and show real finesse. At the moment his prices remain reasonable, giving a taste of star quality Burgundy without the price tag. Incidentally, he is not related to other Magnien domaines that pepper the Côte de Nuits, though he is a relation of the Lignier family of Morey-St-Denis.
