The Wine

Philippe produces of the finest old Grenache wines in the world today. Fermented in open concrete vats and tanks, it is a wine of considerable elegance and grace. Despite all the accolades, it remains very fairly priced. This 2022 release from Philippe is superb, consistent and will reward careful cellaring handsomely.

Dark red; the nose centers on spiced cooked damson plum, with a peppery thrust at its core. The palate offers a well-grounded, fluid glass of Châteauneuf, with bustling tannins, assured length, and sparks of garrigue as it finishes, with menthol present. It has the body and composition to come together for a handsome, genuine glass. Its texture is wholesome and tasty. Best from late 2026. DrinkRhone.com, Oct 2023.

About the Wine Maker

Although only a few will ever get to these wines as the Domaine is very small (only 5 ½ ha in Châteauneuf-duape and 10 ha of Côtes du Rhône, with over half on vines approaching 100 years old), they are well worth the effort to find.

All the vines are situated in the lieu-dit Chemin Saint Jean, the same northern holy grail as Charvin, Beaucastel, Marcoux, and La Vieille Julienne.

The current custodian, Philippe Bravay, employs organic growing techniques and severely limits (his Côtes du Rhône yields less than 2 tonnes per acre, and the Châteauneuf-du-Pape less). Vinification is traditional, using open-top fermenters, presses, and cement cuves. A producer to follow!
