Chateau des Quarts 1er Cru 'Clos des Quarts' Pouilly Fuisse 2022
The Wine
Château des Quarts (was created in 2012 through a joint partnership between two old friends, Dominique Lafon and Oliver Merlin. The vineyard (Monopole) is located in Chaintré, the southernmost village of Pouilly-Fuissé. At just over 2 hectares, the oldest vines are almost a century old and are planted on clay-limestone soils.
91-93 Points, Neal Martin, Vinous ‘The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Château des Quarts 1er Cru Monopole has a delineated, precise bouquet with tension and energy. The palate is well balanced with a fine delineation, white peach and grapefruit mixed with crushed stone and a potent ginger note towards the refined finish’
92-95 Points, Jasper Morris – Inside Burgundy ‘Definitely a green tint in the middle. The tension from the old vines shows immediately. All in white fruit, very dense yet without the exotic element of some. Very intense, holds its oak well, with impeccable persistence. Brilliant wine!

About the Wine Maker
The Clos des Quarts is located in Chaintre in the Burgundy region of Macconais. It covers an area of over two hectares and its oldest vines were planted in 1917. Protected by a high stone wall this plot is a monopole. Exposed to the East, with a slight slope and on a very stony clay-limestone and well-drained soil, this plot always offers high quality, beautiful fruits. To preserve this exceptional heritage the Domaine Merlin team applies a vigorous viticulture. The grapes are vinified by Olivier Merlin and business partner Dominique Lafon in the Merlin winery located in la Roche Vineuse.
… Oliver Merlin was positively aglow as he told me about his joint venture purchase with Dominique Lafon of the historic property known as the Château des Quarts; indeed, he described it as a “once in a lifetime opportunity. Financially speaking it was too expensive for me to purchase it alone, so I called my good friend Dominique and told him about the possibility of acquiring the property. We went to look it over and as soon as Dominique saw it he said ‘I’m in, this is an opportunity that we’ll probably never see again. BURGHOUND
Olivier Merlin is widely regarded as being one of the very finest winemakers in the Mâconnais. Olivier has established a reputation as one of the region’s most dynamic growers, a reference point for the Mâconnais. The whites demonstrate his exceptional winemaking talents, and the potential of “lowly” appellations. They are frequently taken for Côte d’Or wines if tasted blind. JASPER MORRIS MW
