The Wine

Antoni Galloni, Vinous, 94 Points 'The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is elegant, translucent and classy. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and cinnamon all grace this elegant, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Vietti. I especially admire the energy here. In many vintages, the Castiglione is easy going and quite accessible, but I see the 2019 needing a few more years to come into its own. I especially admire its focus and cut. '

Vietti's Barolo Castiglione is a quintessential Barolo crafted from premium Nebbiolo grapes. These grapes are handpicked from small but noteworthy vineyards across the Barolo region, with vines aging from 10 to 45 years. The soil, abundant in limestone and clay, supports the Guyot-trained vines at a density of 4500 plants per hectare. This Barolo represents Vietti's interpretation of the classic style, produced with meticulous care and precision. To qualify as a Barolo wine, it must be composed exclusively of Nebbiolo grapes from the specified region and aged for at least 38 months, including a minimum of 18 months in wooden barrels.

The 2019 Vietti Barolo Castiglione is an exemplary Barolo D.O.C.G. Each cru is individually vinified and matured to accentuate the distinct characteristics of its terroir. The grapes are manually harvested in October and undergo fermentation for three to four weeks in steel tanks with skin contact. Following malolactic fermentation in wood, the wine matures for about 30 months in a combination of large barrels and barriques. It boasts a medium-intensity ruby-red hue and an exuberant, opulent nose with aromas of plum, red and dark ripe cherries, blackberry, rose petal, and tobacco. The palate delivers a traditional, robust flavor profile with alpine herb nuances and a leathery finish, complemented by seamlessly integrated tannins. Ideal with stews, game, red meats, and cheeses, the Vietti Barolo Castiglione 2019 is essential for those who value the profound, intricate tastes of a storied Barolo.
