The Wine

Raig de Raïm, translating to 'Ray of Grape' in Catalan, serves as a remarkable introduction to the signature varieties of DO Terra Alta and the Piñol family's dedicated winemaking, deeply rooted in this area. The wines, crafted from low yields and slow, cool fermentation, boast exquisite aromatic expression and complexity. This particular blend of organically farmed Garnacha, Cariñena, and Syrah melds gracefully, creating a wine rich in complex floral and berry aromas, encased by notes of fennel, herbs, and a subtle oak presence in its prolonged finish. It presents a garnet ruby core with a lively violet edge. The nose offers aromas of brambly black raspberries and blackcurrant, intertwined with roasted meat, licorice, and dried oregano. The palate reveals a tart and tangy ripe black cherry flavor, balanced with smoky oak, sweet tobacco, and dried sage. The floral notes of purple pansies enhance the ripe black fruit's richness, leading to a hint of sharp balsamic in the finish.

About the Wine Maker

Celler Piñol, located in the Terra Alta region southwest of Barcelona, is renowned for its highland vineyards and organic viticulture. These elements contribute to wines that embody the freshness of this previously lesser-known area. Celler Piñol's journey reflects the rise of Spanish wines on the global stage over the last decade, showcasing a blend of respect for ancient vineyards and familial traditions with modern winemaking techniques to craft exceptional wines. Terra Alta, akin to Yecla and Vinos de Madrid, is emerging as one of Spain's promising wine regions, characterized by innovative projects and forward-thinking. The winemaking duo, Juanjo Piñol and Cristina Barroll, lead the production, while Juanjo's mother, Josefina, oversees the family's cellar operations.
