Jim Barry 'The McRae Wood' Shiraz 2020 375mls
The Wine
In 1964, Jim Barry and his wife Nancy acquired 70 acres of premium farmland from their friend and neighbour, Duncan McRae Wood, and established their first Shiraz vineyard. Today, their second son Peter, who joined the family business in 1977, oversees Jim Barry Wines alongside his sons, Tom and Sam.
The McRae Wood Shiraz is crafted from select Armagh fruit and other superior grape parcels from the family's Clare Valley vineyards.
It presents dark, brooding aromas of plum and blackberry, complemented by sweet earth, spice, and hawthorn. The wine greets the palate with an effortless flow and sinewy tannins, carrying through to the back palate. Initially, it showcases the characteristic McRae Wood profile, followed by a surge of elegance, floral notes, spice, and a quintessentially brooding finish.
92 Points Mike Bennie 'It's a flavoursome, fuller-figured red with clove and cinnamon wood a feature over red plum, raspberry coulis and figgy, dried fruit characters. Thick in the palate with ribs of firm, gravelly tannin, the wine finishes with decent length, albeit a bit woody/dusty over finesse and freshness. For those seeking a liberally seasoned, bolder red, this works. Drink by 2036.'
