The Wine

Made from the Tinta de Toro (indigenous Tempranillo) variety.

94 points Luis Gutiérrez - Wine Advocate (Jun 14, 2024) 'The wine released in 2024 is the 2019 Pintia, from a very dry year when they did a softer vinification and used some 15% stainless steel for the élevage to keep the fruit and freshness. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and oak vats. It's a powerful year; the wine has 15% alcohol and is round and full-bodied. It's a heady and ripe Pintia. They had to be careful with the harvest date, and they harvested early and quite quickly. Even though the wine is ripe and heady, with notes of grenadine and small ripe berries, it's also exotic and spicy, quite showy, lush and full-bodied, with the 2019 tannins. It's a more powerful wine that is going to require patience. They produced 224,724 bottles, 6,587 magnums and some smaller and larger sizes. It was bottled in May 2021. Drink 2025-2031.'

About the Wine Maker

Vega Sicilia is the most prestigious wine estate in Spain - founded in the 1860s, it’s located in Ribera del Duero, two hours north of Madrid. In 1982 it was purchased by the Alvarez Family.

'Pintia' is a distinct estate developed by the Alvarez family, situated on the banks of the Douro River within the Toro D.O., further west than Vega and closer to the Portuguese border. In 1997, the Alvarez family began acquiring old parcels of 'Tinta' vines. The area is notable for its large pebbles and rocks within the vineyards, which make cultivation extremely difficult but provide the ideal environment for the Tinta de Toro vines. Their first vintage was produced in 2001, with a new cellar completed in 2006 at San Román de Hornija. Toro's climatic environment is more extreme than RdD, resulting in 'Pintia' producing wines that are much more robust, opulent, and black-fruited than their Vega counterparts, yet equally intriguing!
