The Wine

Icon & Collectable!
The Giuseppe Mascarello Monprivato Barolo is one of the great wines of the world. This vineyard, perched in Castiglione Falletto, is a Barolo "Grand Cru" in everything but name—owned exclusively by Mascarello, giving them full reign over every vine, every grape, and every ounce of magic this piece of land produces.

Monprivato isn't just a vineyard; it's a heritage site for Barolo lovers. It demands time and patience to reveal its full potential, but oh, what a reward it is. This 2019 vintage is one to savour over the years, evolving into an ethereal mix of truffle, mulchy earth, and pure, radiant red fruits. It’s a complex beauty that can shift from power to elegance in the blink of an eye, as only Monprivato can.

The Mascarello family’s connection to Monprivato runs deep, back to the early 1900s, when Maurizio Mascarello first realised the potential of this special plot. Today, under Mauro Mascarello, the wines remain firmly traditional, with an unwavering respect for the vineyard’s ability to speak through the wine. Long fermentations, slow ageing—this is Barolo in its purest, most timeless form.

And while they say good things come to those who wait, we'd add: great things come to those who find a bottle of Monprivato. It’s rare, exquisite, and, if you’re lucky enough to grab one, do us all a favour—pour generously and invite friends. This is the kind of wine that deserves an audience, a slow meal, and memories made around the table.

100 Pts Kerin O'Keefe 'Tasting Giuseppe Mascarello’s magnificent 2019 Monprivato stopped me in my tracks with its impeccable class, seemingly infinite energy and great balance between fruit, depth and finesse. Both fragrant and utterly delicious, it captivates with mesmerizing aromas of new leather, iris, spice and citrus while the full-bodied, racy palate boasts crunchy red cherry, juicy strawberry, black tea, and white pepper before closing on notes of star anise and salty mineral. An absolute stunner, this has it all.'

About the Wine Maker

The estate of Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio has a long and illustrious history in Piemont, and it is unequivocally one of the greatest Barolo producers. This traditionally-styled winery's origins date back to the mid-1800s, when Giuseppe Mascarello made a name for himself managing the vineyards of other landowners, and which ultimately culminated in the purchase of his own vineyards and cellars in 1881 in the village of Monforte d'Alba.

Mauro Mascarello has been the winemaker for the Giuseppe Mascarello estate since the late 1960s, succeeding his father, Giuseppe, and his grandfather, Maurizio, both legends in their time. And like them, Mauro is a traditionalist dedicated to long fermentations and aging in old botti. But Mauro has also made important changes, not the least of which was the creation of a single Barolo from the great Monprivato vineyard in 1970. Prior to that year, his family had always made their towering Barolos and Barolo Riservas by blending Monprivato fruit with grapes from other sites.
