Izway Wines 'Harold' Shiraz 2023
The Wine
An intriguing Northern Eden Valley Shiraz that will only get better with age.
From the undulating hills of the Northern Eden Valley this single-hectare Shiraz vineyard is the third release from “Harold’s” new home in the sub region of Moculta. Like an old fisherman who can’t let go of a past favourite watering hole, we’ve been comfortable setting up the deck chairs at this new site just upstream from the original vineyard.
An incredibly intense and distinctive nose signals a cool harvest, with tobacco leaf and tamarind combined with celeriac and white pepper to create a beguiling, intriguing, and enticing aroma. The texture is equally titillating, with assertive tannin and spice coiling fluently with dark cherry, orange rind, and Campari-like florals. It evokes recollections of Barolo and Cornas, two of my favourite regions in the world, of course with our own unique, Eden Valley twist. A wine that changed gears overnight and became an incredibly balanced and silky drink on day two. It will age gracefully over a long period. Cellaring: 5-20 years (from vintage).1896 bottles produced.

About the Wine Maker
Recently Ex Torbreck Head Winemaker (2006-2017), Craig Isbel, owner and winemaker of Izway Wines, dropped in to pour his latest creations. He knows a thing or two about the Barossa - his pedigree at Torbreck included turning out 4 x 100 point Wine Advocate wines and countless 99-pointers!!
Craig, along with his wife Kathryn own and operate Izway Wines in the Barossa Valley. Their ‘Micro’ winery turns out incredible handcrafted wines, albeit in minute quantities - their annual crush varies from 22 to 25 tons - TINY!
In addition to producing wine from vines around their house and winery, they collaborate with a couple of long-term partners with small plots nearby as well as one plot in the Eden Valley. All grapes are sourced from old vines and organically grown. The Isbels work in a 'Lo-Fi' manner, using no pumps, a basket press and minimal additions of sulphur - very hands off!
The Isbels' suite of wines are characterized by a remarkable purity and depth - with an unmissable velvet glide. These wines are exceptional expressions of Australian Shiraz that should be in sitting in any fine wine cellar!
