Domaine de Ferrand Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge 2022
The Wine
Philippe Bravay produces some of the finest old vine Grenache wines in the world today. This cuvee is 90% Grenache, the vines ranging in age from 60 to 100 years of age, and the balance is made up of twelve other Châteauneuf varietals allowed under the appellation rules. His methods are classic, and the aging is for the most part in large oak foudre (barrel), but also a small portion in old barriques (smaller barrel), however no new oak. The wine shows considerable elegance and grace. Despite all the accolades, it remains very fairly priced. This 2022 release from Philippe is superb, consistent and will reward cellaring.
Dark red; the nose centers on spiced cooked damson plum, with a peppery thrust at its core. The palate offers a well-grounded, fluid glass of Châteauneuf, with bustling tannins, assured length, and sparks of garrigue as it finishes, with menthol present. It has the body and composition to come together for a handsome, genuine glass. Its texture is wholesome and tasty. Best from late 2026. DrinkRhone.com, Oct 2023.
