The Wine

A Syrah bearing my mothers name that expresses her softly spoken manners in a style she orchestrated me to vinifi for her via her up bringing of a natural progression of zero sulfite dosage. Domenic Torzi

Planted in 2014 to 3 unique Barossa shiraz clones; Steinert Flaxman Valley, Tolley Nuriootpa & Stonewell Marananga these three achieved light, shade and comfort in its styling from the Barossa eastern, western hills and valley floor sites that are now embedded at our Angaston Village home on a 380mt limestone enriched hill. Hand harvested 10% whole bunch naturally fermented in open milk vats, basket pressed to ex white Chardonnay Burgundian 300lt barrels & bottled unfiltered.

'Black fruit, liquorice, violet, grilled meat with plenty of pepper, sage and walnut. It’s medium-bodied, deep and spicy, fresh and cool blackberry acidity, dark cocoa and dried flowers, almond, fleshy crushed rock tannin, and a meaty/spicy/perfumed finish of excellent length. So good'. THE WINE FRONT, GARY WALSH FEB 2023

'...has such an enjoyable, unforced silken nature. Dark berries, cocoa butter, and plums in among the dark berries. Elegant, refined, silken. Maybe not powerful in the classic sense, but such a lovely drink. Fine tannins cap it all off wonderfully. So good, so lively, and never lacking in actual flavour. Would I buy it? Sure would.' OZWINE REVIEW, ANDREW GRAHAM JUNE 2023

'This generous medium bodied pure syrah comes from quite young vines in Angaston above the Barossa Valley floor. Opens with aromas of dried herbs and sage with a clove influence over the primary red fruits. The palate is medium weight but with plenty of fruit intensity. Loads of dark fruit delivered with a dry focus accentuated by the chalky tannins. Nice wine for drinking now or a few more years if you wish.' THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN, RAY JORDAN MARCH 2023

About the Wine Maker

Torzi Matthews, a food and winemaking partnership between Domenic Torzi and Tracy Matthews have passion and the firm conviction of appreciating the value of heritage tradition in the crafting of their wines and olive produce.

Domenic is fifth generation Calabrian – Abruzzese stock and grew up on the Adelaide Plains working for the family’s market gardens, Tracy was born and raised in Newcastle, NSW with a long career in hospitality.

In 1996 we stumbled across a small, frost-pocketed hollow in the beautiful Mt McKenzie, Eden Valley and fell in love with the area for its remoteness and its diverse thin soils. The rationale was quite simple: this land would produce low yields of fruit which in turn would translate into flavoursome European style wines – the style of wines needed to match our Mediterranean food. We had plenty of detractors and lots of unsolicited advice, some good, some …well some people don’t have vision.

The vines went in, the frosts came, the yields were low and the wines were created. Self taught as a youngster it was quite natural being involved in the  production of wine for own consumption, with that confidence our wines are crafted via non-interventional Italian / European techniques that employs careful hand harvesting, whole bunch natural ferments, basket pressed and the use of fine grained French oak barrels.

We have also produced wines under the Vigna Cantina label that introduces our Italian family native varietals and those outside the Italian wares that I seek interest to explore. These wines are truly wonderful in their aromatics and fresh lively fruit flavours that are the pinnacle of Mediterranean food pairing.

Our story doesn’t end there though. Whilst developing the wine side, Tracy and I took over the reigns of the family table olive & olive oil business. Setting a new direction we increased the sourcing of wild olives scattered throughout the Barossa Valley. These magnificent ancient wild olive trees date back to the 1880’s producing extra virgin olive oil of amazing quality and character. TORZI MATTHEWS
