The Wine

The Farr Rising Pinot vineyard, planted in 2001, features a diverse array of rootstocks but is limited to three clones—MV6, 114, and 115. The vineyard is situated on a highly exposed, nutrient-poor north-facing slope, topped with grey sandy loam and ironstone pebbles, transitioning to black volcanic soil over limestone at the base.

The grapes are handpicked and sorted directly in the vineyard. Fermentation occurs in open-top fermenters, with about 60 to 70 percent of the stems removed. The wine is then transferred into 20 to 30 percent new Allier oak barrels using gravity. Post-secondary fermentation, it is gas-racked (through using inert gas to gently move the wine - better than pumps which tend to damage the wine) and then once more at 18 months before bottling. Over the years, this site has proven its ability to produce wines that rival its more established counterparts.

The 2022 vintage exhibits greater elegance than in previous years, with vibrant red fruits and spices, a delicate palate, yet a richness of flavor. There’s a real polished and sophisticated expression of fruit here, with delightful acidity providing perfect balance. It's aromatic, thoroughly pleasing and one of the most captivating Farr Rising Pinots Noirs to date!

About the Wine Maker

Farr Rising is already right up there when it comes to quality and excitement. The wines could barely boast better pedigree, with Nick Farr at the helm and impeccable fruit sources. These range from Pinot and Chardonnay grapes from the Farrs' own 2002 plantings to 35-year-old vines from 10km further down the Moorabool valley. Made in an earlier-drinking style than some of the By Farr range, the Farr Rising wines often go toe-to-toe with their illustrious label-mates. They represent some of the best-value terroir-driven wines available.

Nick Farr readily acknowledges the influence of father Gary in his winemaking and viticultural practices—however, these have been significantly enhanced by his own vast experience. While he was growing up, Nick often worked alongside his father on the family estate before a stint at Rosemount in the Hunter Valley in the late 90s. This was followed by more vintages with Gary as well as at Innisfail Vineyards in the Bannockburn area, where Nick commenced his label Farr Rising. Like his father, Nick has experience at international vineyards, including Cristom in Oregon, Au Bon Climate in California, and Domain Dujac in Burgundy.

Nick’s enthusiasm and passion for wine is captivating, and an excellent grounding in both the new and old schools of winemaking is the perfect complement to his individual tastes and ideas. “The wines we make are not mainstream—they are expressions of our vineyard, our land and what we like to drink.
