The Wine

The Di Renzo chardonnay is made with fruit that we sourced from a small vineyard on the Amaroo Road between Orange and Molong owned by Kylie and Scott Mosley as well as small portion (12%) from Bella Luna. We harvested a total of just over 2 tonnes from half a hectare of good quality Chardonnay on 21 February. The fruit was stored in the cool room overnight before being basket pressed. 50% was settled and the other 50% went straight to a combination of barriques and 1 puncheon (all old) for a spontaneous fermentation to take place over a 20 day period. The Bella Luna component was blended in late in the piece from a barrel showing quite a bit of sulfide that we thought would over power the 2021 Bella Luna when it’s time to go to bottle came and be quite beneficial to the Chardonnay di Renzo.

The wines sat on their full fermentation lees, some were stirred, some weren’t- likewise with malo, for 7 months prior to a small sulphur addition, light filtration, blending and bottling on September 15 2021. A delicate Chardonnay, admittedly it still needs some time to open. At the moment the nose is showing bread dough, sea spray and melon rind. Lemon pfiff, white peach, green apple, fennel phenol in the mouth. Texture is there but not overt. A medium weighted cool climate Chardonnay exhibiting plenty of charm as at October 2021. Rezaglia

I had this recently at the Argle Inn, Taralga (which btw is excellent!) and just had to secure an allocation of this complex and moorish treat. Highly recommend! TC

About the Wine Maker

Mark & Sandy Renzaglia took on the challenge of establishing a small vineyard in O’Connell Valley near Bathurst in 1997. There was no power, no town water, no neighbours growing grapes, just determination. Now their son Sam is on the hunt, taking Renzaglia Wines to the next level, seeking modern expressions from grapes sourced locally, and really pushing the conversation around responsible, sustainable, respectful farming in NSW. Renzaglia The family home, the Bella Luna Vineyard, and the winery are nestled in the rolling hills of the locality of O’Connell. It looks out over the O’Connell Valley to the north-east and further towards the Winburndale Nature Reserve, Mt Ovens and Mt Horrible. From this patch of dirt, the Renzaglia family have been tending to two acres of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot since 1997. Recent plantings of Tempranillo, Grenache, Shiraz, Viognier, and Chardonnay were added to the mix in 2020, plus Sangiovese this year.
