The Wine

This wine is a blend of several blocks of Pinot (clones D5V12, 114, 115 and 777) growing in our two vineyards in the cool-climate, maritime region of Denmark, Western Australia. Unfined and unfiltered at bottling to capture the subtle nuances, this wine is a soft, fruit-driven and aromatic expression of cool climate Pinot noir.

92 pts - Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot) : One of the bigger surprises in the wine world in recent years has been just how many good Pinots are coming out of Western Australia, and Harewood Estate has certainly given us their fair share. This is made with fruit grown in the Denmark sub-region in the Great Southern, from a mix of clones. There are two vineyards which contribute – one planted in 1988 and the other in 1995 – so older vines are certainly contributing. The wine was bottled unfiltered and unfined. An attractive pale purple, the aromas are instantly alluring – plums, dry herbs, mulberries, red berries and an intriguing touch of truffle. Seamless in structure, appealingly textured and medium bodied at best, the wine has a fine line of acidity running through it rounded off by silky tannins. This will sail through the next three to four years but will equally provide immediate gratification, if such is your preference. Good value.

92 pts - Stuart Robinson (The Vinsomniac) : Pinot Noir from the maritime cool of Denmark in Western Australia's Great Southern region. It's all Plum, cassis - set against a darker edge, smoked wood and perhaps even a touch meaty in its initial representation. Lithe, juicy - succulent red fruits, again before a darker edge. Light and shade, night and day. A wine of opposing parts - contributing overall to the whole. An edge of tannin that adds an extra element to the contrasting fruit profile.

About the Wine Maker

Even by Australian standards, the Great Southern is vast, indeed one of the largest, and most isolated wine regions in the world. It is the playground of winemaker James Kellie, where he has a clear vision to create wines that represent the diversity and capacity of this unique place.

The Great Southern wine growing region provides unmatched versatility and quality for a winemaker. Harewood Estate wines showcase the diverse and spectacular Great Southern region. Based in Denmark, along the coast overlooking the Southern Ocean, the estate vineyards cover two sites off Scotsdale Road north of the town: the original Harewood vineyard and the recently acquired Apricus Hill. The Estate vineyards are complemented by those managed to James Kellie’s specifications across this dynamic region.

James’ elegant and pure wine style reflects the pristine, un-spoilt nature of his backyard. This potential is expressed in a range of wines produced from grapes grown in select, low yielding Frankland River, Mount Barker, Porongurup and Denmark vineyards.
