The Wine

The name Coucherias originates from the fact that the vineyard is exposed West so facing the sun sets. It was planted in the 1950s. The plot is situated on a soil that is constituted of clay and lime stone, and that is very steep. It is divided into two sub-islets, the smallest being a former quarry. The soil is very clayey and red, which gives a dense texture to this wine’s tannins. The “Clos” is isolated by trees and broom which is a rare plant in Burgundy. The plot has been cultivated with biodynamical practices since its origins in 1985. Traditional high density vineyard 10000 vines per ha.

90-93 points, 4 Stars Jasper Morris MW Inside Burgundy : "Rich deep purple, with a sunny happy nose of bright dark fruit, but picked in good time. It is nearly too rich (liqueur cherry style) on the palate but holds its own and is probably more red than black. 60% whole bunch freshens up the finish. Juicy and delicious. Picked on 22nd August at 12.5% and not chaptalised. Which prompts two thoughts – pleasure that producers are happy to stay at what are now lower than usual alcohol levels, and interest that the fruit profile of this wine is nonetheless on the richer side. Tasted: October 2021"

About the Wine Maker

Experienced and well connected Boris Champy seized the moment when the oldest Demeter-certified operation in Burgundy became available, that of Didier Montchovet's Domaine (founded 1984) located at 421 metres asl at Nantoux, in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune.

In effect Boris has taken over a suite of beautiful vineyards in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune with small holdings as well as a plot in Pommard & 2 Beaune 1er Cru sites. Surprisingly, many of the vineyards over the years have been be replanted, where needed with pre phylloxera massale selections.

Boris's previous engagements include managing Dominus wine estate in Napa Valley, Louis Latour and Clos des Lambrays.

Boris's move up into the hills looks timely given the climatic changes impacting some of the more prestigious areas on the Cote d'Or. The vines up in these cooler hiller areas are now seeing greater warmth that they're lapping up to their benefit!

In following on a Bio-dynamic path, Didier previously provided for compensation areas and biodiversity on his holding, planting trees and pastures species that play a crucial role in the ecosystem. Boris is continuing this approach.

Boris brings his wealth of experience to this new venture, and is definitely a Domaine to keep an eye on in the future!
