Bouchard Monthelie 1er Cru Les Duresses 2019
The Wine
Located between Volnay and Meursault, the village of Monthélie is much less known than its illustrious neighbours. However, on this terroir, the first traces of vines go back to the 9th century. As for the "Les Duresses" climate, it is divided between the villages of Auxey-Duresses, of which it is the jewel, and the village of Monthélie, where it is one of the most remarkable Premiers Crus. The 1.72 hectares of the Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils, often harvested a little later than the other Monthélie, give birth to rich and pleasantly structured wines. One to look out for in warmer vintages!
90-92+ Robert Parkers Wine Advocate : "The 2019 Monthélie 1er Cru Les Duresses opens in the glass with scents of peonies, wild berries, dark chocolate and coniferous forest floor. Medium-bodied, lively and concentrated, it's deep and velvety, with lively acids and an unusually suave, elegant texture for young Monthélie. From a late-ripening site, its racier profile distinguishes it from the more gourmand Monthélie Champs Fulliot."
89-92 Allan Meadows, Burghound "A much earthier and more sauvage-suffused nose speaks of poached plum, dark raspberry and a hint of forest floor. There is both excellent energy and details to the nicely mineral-driven medium weight flavors that conclude in a grippy but not tough finish that offers fine depth and persistence. Les Duresses almost never drinks especially well young and I don’t see this one doing that either so be prepared to give it at least 5 to 6 years first."
89-91 Jasper Morris, MW Inside Burgundy "Clean glowing purple, picked late, but this pays off with a really classy nose. Perhaps lifted by the whole bunch, which gives an additional ripe strawberry perfume. Crunchy and dynamic, with correct acidity and the fruit covers any tannins entirely. Long and delicious."
